Jamboree On The Air, (JOTA) is an annual event in which Scouts, and later Guides, all over the world connect with each other by means of amateur radio.
History of JOTA
In 1957 scout leader and amateur radio operator, Leslie Mitchell G3BHK, devised the initial Jamboree On The Air. As an amateur radio operator, Leslie considered that scouts from around the world could gather together over the air waves, without the need to travel long distances.
Over time, Jamboree On The Air has expanded to include other activities, introducing youth members to technology of radio and electronics.
Following is a video produced by JNN TV Sydney (Scout Media Group). Entitled JOTA 2017, the video captures youth members involved in various activities over the Jamboree On The Air weekend, in the Northern Beaches area.
JOTA at Boree Regatta
Since 1995, over the third full weekend in October, Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) has been an activity of the Endeavour Boree Regatta. Members and friends of The St George Amateur Radio Society (SGARS) setup and operate an amateur radio station. Guides and scouts can talk to other youth members locally, around Australia or the world. Alternatively, youth members can test their skills to find a radio transmitter hidden within the Boree camp site.
