The association between the scouting movement and amateur radio operators began over 60 years ago when scout leader and radio operator, Les R Mitchell G3BHK thought of the idea to use amateur radio to bring scouts around the world together, without the organisation and expense of travelling long distances. The first Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) was held in 1957.

The hobby of amateur radio has changed significantly in the last 60 years. With the evolution of modern digital communication techniques, amateur radio has much to offer the tech savvy young generation. Activities such as Summits On The Air, Radio Direction Finding (fox hunting) and Parks and Peaks also have a synergy with guide and scout activities. The foundation licence provides an excellant oppurtunity for youth members to enter the hobby of amateur radio.
